A Sculptural Island Retreat Takes Shape on Nurai Island

Award-winning studio Yodezeen designed this ambitious resort masterplan for Nurai Island, a 42-hectare private retreat set just off the coast of Abu Dhabi. The project brings together 53 sea-access villas, a mid-rise apartment block overlooking the city skyline, and a carefully choreographed arrival sequence anchored by a sweeping pier and ceremonial entrance.

The site will include beach clubs, pools, restaurants and a contemporary spa, but the project’s focal point is the sculptural event hall, with its rounded, perforated shell. This is where Yodezeen delves into bionic architecture, drawing inspiration from dunes and traditional tent settlements to emphasize movement, rhythm and light. Materials and forms lean contemporary, but subtle references to Arab vernacular run throughout, shaping a visual language that feels grounded in local culture and landscape.
