Breaking the Grid: 45 Degrees Residence by ArchJS

Kuwaiti architecture studio ArchJS breaks away from the conventional residential grid with the 45 Degrees Residence, a striking villa in Bida’a designed around a simple geometric intervention. By rotating the main volume 45 degrees, the architects created a distinctive composition of angular forms and triangular courtyards, describing the elevated structure as a “floating jewel.”

The exterior pairs imposing black stone walls with crisp white volumes that appear to hover above the darker base. Throughout the property, sharp diagonal lines carve out sheltered terraces, planted courtyards and dramatic circulation spaces, while greenery softens the concrete and stone surfaces. At the center, a secluded pool and sunken lounge sit beneath broad overhangs, creating an intimate retreat protected from the surrounding neighborhood.

Inside, the same restrained palette continues through exposed concrete, black marble and warm timber details. Large openings connect the living spaces to gardens and terraces, while carefully integrated lighting accentuates the architecture after dark, tracing stairs, walls and landscaped areas with a subtle glow.
