Burning Precision: Matchstick Sculptures by John Ret
Published Mar 16, 2026
John Ret sculpts thousands of matches into breathtaking creatures and objects, then lights the fuse.
John’s process starts with meticulous craftsmanship, using matchsticks to shape animals and everyday objects with impressive precision. But the end goal is always calculated destruction. His sculptures are already striking as static objects, yet they are designed to burn, with carefully positioned ignition points built into each composition so fire travels through the structure in a controlled sequence.
That final stage completely transforms the work. A horse darkens into a charred silhouette, a fox turns black while its eyes remain vivid before fading out completely, and a tiger shifts from bright red to glowing embers as flames move across the body.
You can discover more of his creations and watch his process in action on YouTube and Instagram.
