ENESS Turns Kalmar Castle into a Luminous AI Labyrinth
Published May 12, 2026
Melbourne-based art and technology studio ENESS is back with Modern Guru and the Path to Artificial Happiness, an expanded immersive exhibition inside Sweden’s 800-year-old Kalmar Castle.
The exhibition turns the historic site into a luminous maze of talking rocks, glowing digital forests, simulated ponds and speculative machines. Across the journey, visitors move from ancient-looking stones with pixelated eyes to The Uncanny Valley, a new installation created for Kalmar Castle, where twisting forms lead to Petros, an AI-enabled rock that observes and responds to its audience.
At the centre of the experience is Modern Guru, a translucent oracle dispensing AI-generated wisdom whenever visitors photograph him. Nearby, The Cloud Utopia Machine sends phones along a conveyor belt beneath cloud-like chambers, recording shareable video “postcards” from imagined AI futures. Playful, strange and deliberately provocative, the exhibition uses light, sound and interaction to question our growing dependence on technology for meaning, happiness and connection.
Modern Guru and the Path to Artificial Happiness is on view at Kalmar Castle until November 1st, 2026.
