Experimental Album Cover Designs by Non-Format

Design studio Non-Format has created an impressive collection of album covers that explore the possibilities of typography, color and composition. Founded in London in 2000 by Norwegian designer Kjell Ekhorn and British designer Jon Forss, the studio is known for its experimental approach to graphic design, combining striking visual concepts with meticulous attention to detail.

Their music-related projects showcase an incredible range of styles, from minimalist compositions featuring iridescent gradients and geometric shapes to elaborate typographic experiments that turn letterforms into abstract works of art. Some designs feature oversized, overlapping typography and unconventional layouts, while others rely on atmospheric photography, vibrant colors and intricate printing techniques. The studio also pays close attention to the physical experience of music packaging, incorporating textured surfaces, metallic finishes and other tactile details that make these records feel like collectible art objects.

Beyond album artwork, Non-Format’s portfolio spans art direction, illustration, branding and custom typography for major clients including Nike, Adobe, Coca-Cola, Sony Music and The New York Times. Their work has earned several international accolades, including a D&AD Yellow Pencil and two Tokyo TDC Prizes. Although Kjell and Jon now live in Norway and the United States respectively, they continue to collaborate closely across continents, producing unique designs that challenge conventions and celebrate creative experimentation.
