Exquisite Hand Lettering by Martin Schmetzer
Published Jun 25, 2026
Stockholm-based designer Martin Schmetzer creates intricate hand-lettering pieces filled with ornate flourishes, sharp linework and an impressive level of detail. Working from his one-man studio in Sweden, he has been crafting custom lettering for clients around the world since 2011.
His work pulls directly from nineteenth-century sign painting and engraving, from the dense ornamentation of Victorian show cards and the interlocking monograms of old trade marks to the gothic weight of metal-band logotypes. His process always starts with pencil sketches, where elaborate compositions slowly take shape through sweeping curves, decorative serifs, layered shadows and carefully balanced letterforms. Some pieces are later refined digitally, but the hand-drawn foundation remains central to the work, giving each design a sense of precision and character that feels classical and contemporary at once.
