Exquisite Playing Cards by Peter Voth

German designer and illustrator Peter Voth has been creating richly detailed, human-crafted work since 2010, guided by a desire to pursue “the Good, the True & the Beautiful” through design. His portfolio includes an impressive selection of custom playing cards, and in this article we’re showcasing two of his most striking projects, Spurgeon’s and Pilgrim’s Progress.

Both projects draw on historical imagery and traditional printmaking, using dense linework, engraved-style portraits, decorative borders and carefully integrated typography to give the decks a distinct old-world feel. Spurgeon’s takes its cues from the Victorian era and the life of preacher Charles Haddon Spurgeon, while Pilgrim’s Progress translates the characters, locations and symbolism of John Bunyan’s 1678 allegory into an equally elaborate visual world.

Across both sets, Peter packs an extraordinary amount of detail into the familiar format of a playing card. Architectural motifs, period clothing and ornamental flourishes sit alongside metallic gold accents, with equally intricate tuck boxes extending the artwork beyond the cards themselves. The combination of historical references and meticulous craftsmanship makes each deck feel almost like a miniature illustrated archive.
