Flora Incognita: Otherworldly Botanical Studies by Vincent Fournier

We’ve previously featured French artist Vincent Fournier and his fascinating photographs of space centers and Brasília’s modernist architecture. Now, he’s turning his attention to the natural world with Flora Incognita, an extraordinary series of botanical studies. Developed through a combination of photography, photogrammetry and 3D manipulation, the project presents a surreal collection of imaginary specimens inspired by the remarkable adaptability of life on Earth.

Each composition transforms familiar botanical forms into something strange and otherworldly. Delicate petals twist into elaborate sculptural structures, leaves curl into sweeping ribbons, and flowers develop unusual textures and exaggerated proportions. Presented against carefully selected monochromatic backgrounds, these fantastic specimens feature vibrant colors and intricate details that make them look both scientifically convincing and wonderfully alien.

Developed in collaboration with researchers and institutions including NASA, the Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle and the CNRS, Flora Incognita imagines how vegetation might adapt to extreme extraterrestrial conditions, from intense gravitational forces to unusual atmospheric environments.
