From Pixels to Cardboard: Intricate Creations by Tomohisa Iwai

Japanese artist Tomohisa Iwai makes full-scale replicas of helmets, masks and armor from corrugated cardboard. His subjects include a gas mask, Daft Punk’s two robot helmets and a complete Iron Man suit. Each one is crafted entirely from flat, precisely cut panels.

Tomohisa’s creations look like low-poly 3D models turned into physical objects. Rather than smoothing out curves, he breaks every contour into faceted surfaces and leaves the seams and exposed corrugated edges visible as part of the design. That aesthetic connects directly to another side of his practice. He works not only as a cardboard artist but also a CG creator, combining traditional hands-on craft with digital design.

His unconventional practice started attracting attention in 2014, when he received commissions from a television station and Disney. He went independent the following year and has continued working across cardboard art and CG ever since.
