Genesis: Evolving Sculptures by Jiménez Deredia
Published Apr 3, 2026
Jiménez Deredia’s Genesis series unfolds as a study of transformation, where a single, elemental form, the sphere, becomes the starting point for his sculptural narratives. Each piece expands from that origin, stretching and opening into new configurations that suggest growth, pressure and release. Presented in sequence, the works look almost like frames from a film, tracing a gradual shift from compact simplicity to more complex, articulated forms.
The series reflects Jiménez’s concept of “Transmutative Symbolism,” where matter is never fixed but constantly evolving through time and space. Smooth, polished surfaces split or fold to reveal a living figure within, linking physical transformation to ideas of life, origin and consciousness.
These ideas are closely tied to his background. Born in Costa Rica and later shaped by his time in Italy, his work combines pre-Columbian influences, particularly the ancient stone spheres of the Boruca culture, with Renaissance thought and European sculptural traditions. In Genesis, that dialogue becomes clear. The sphere is both artifact and concept, a symbol of cultural memory and a framework for exploring how form, identity and existence continue to evolve.
