GridType Vol. 1: A Playful Exploration of Type

Slanted Publishers continues its excellent series of design resources with GridType Vol. 1, a new publication examining how digital tools, historical systems and creative experimentation can shape contemporary typography. The 96-page volume presents ten typefaces created using GridType, an online tool that allows designers to construct letterforms through adjustable grids, stencils and modular parameters.
Inspired by historical grid-based lettering systems, GridType features nine frameworks based on rectangles, circles, triangles, pixels and segmented displays. Contributors including Anna Cairns, Charlotte Rohde, Hanna Boslau, Studio HanLi, Trang Hà and Özgür Deniz Koldas use these constraints in dramatically different ways, producing everything from blocky geometric alphabets to dotted, fragmented and highly expressive forms. The typefaces featured in the book are also available to download through the GridType website.
Alongside the type specimens, interviews and Q&As explore the relationship between typography, technology and tool-building, presenting GridType not simply as a font collection, but as an invitation to rethink how letterforms are made. GridType Vol. 1 is available now through Slanted’s website.
