Hypnotic Hyperrealist Portraits by David Uessem
Published May 15, 2026
German painter David Uessem works from a former church near Cologne, and the scale of his canvases suggests he needs the space. His large-format oil and acrylic works place photorealistic human portraits in direct tension with surreal, tactile intrusions: shimmering foils, cascading flowers and clusters of gemstones, all rendered with a precision that makes the painted surface indistinguishable from the real thing at a distance.
That gap between distance and proximity is intentional. Uessem’s self-developed glazing techniques produce surfaces so convincing they only reveal themselves as paint when you step uncomfortably close. The concealment cuts both ways: his subjects are masked, while the act of painting itself hides behind the illusion of photography. What reads as surface turns out to be layers. What appears real turns out to be constructed. Trained under master painter Professor Qi Yang in Bochum, Uessem works in the tradition of the Old Masters while pulling pop culture squarely into the frame.
