Layers of Light: Glass Sculptures by Boldizsár Lukácsi

Hungarian artist Boldizsár Lukácsi is continuing a remarkable family tradition in glass while developing a visual language of his own. The youngest generation of an artistic family, Boldizsár learned many of his sculpting techniques from his father, acclaimed glass artist László Lukácsi, whose work we featured back in 2019.

Boldizsár’s sculptures are formed from carefully layered sheets of glass, which create flowing curves, rhythmic waves and nested geometric forms. Cool aquamarine tones, deep greens and smoky browns shift dramatically as light passes through the material, revealing subtle gradients and giving the solid structures a weightless feel. Their smooth contours also create a striking contrast with the rigid construction of the individual glass layers.

That tension between opposing forces sits at the heart of Boldizsár’s practice. His work explores differences in values, beliefs and attitudes between generations, looking at how conflict can create distance but also open the way for understanding and growth. Light becomes another important part of this language, representing balance, harmony and spiritual purity while allowing each sculpture to constantly change in response to its surroundings.
