Magnetic Dance: Ferrofluid Photos by Jeremy Spaunhurst
Published Apr 10, 2026
Seattle-based photographer Jeremy Spaunhurst explores the intersection of fluid dynamics and image-making, capturing ferrofluid as a shifting, responsive material. Shot in tight macro, these compositions reveal clusters, channels and radial forms that look like cellular structures under a microscope.
Ferrofluid is a suspension of iron particles in a carrier fluid (oil in this case), which responds to magnets placed beneath or around the surface. Jeremy uses that responsiveness to craft his images in real time, guiding the material into spikes, ridges and branching paths. Lighting and color push the work further, moving from deep violets to electric greens and saturated blues.
Across the series, the forms remain controlled despite their volatility, repeating and evolving from one image to the next. It’s a precise translation of invisible forces into something tangible and vividly graphic.
