Molly Devlin’s Beautifully Surreal Paintings Fuse Flora and Fauna
Published Jun 9, 2026
Sacramento-based artist Molly Devlin paints animals as living ecosystems, merging feathers, fur, leaves, flowers, fungi and sea life into strange, delicate hybrids. Her surreal works turn familiar creatures into organic dreamscapes, where a rabbit might grow from clover, a swan becomes a cluster of lily pads, and a bear appears covered in pale, translucent leaves.
Molly’s paintings are created with fine botanical forms that wrap around bodies, replace plumage, or dissolve into ghostly textures, giving each subject a sense of slow mutation. Birds, cats, foxes, horses, jellyfish and small woodland animals all appear caught between species, as if nature is constantly borrowing from itself and reshaping what belongs where.
A dark, nocturnal atmosphere runs through the work, but it never overwhelms the softness of her details. Black backgrounds make the illuminated forms glow, while vintage-style frames add a cabinet-of-curiosities feel to some pieces.
