Northern Silence: Iceland Photos by Cath Simard

Canadian photographer Cath Simard reinterprets Iceland’s snow-covered peaks, black sand shores and glacial caves into scenes that feel unreal, where auroras bend into perfect arcs and ice formations take on the presence of carved architecture. Her images have a strong visual identity, built on deep blues, sharp contrasts and tightly controlled light.

Cath approaches the landscape as a collection of fragments rather than a fixed moment. She hikes, revisits and reworks locations, capturing elements across different times, conditions and even years, then assembles them into a single frame. The process is slow and deliberate. Days in the field might yield nothing, while a finished image can carry the weight of multiple expeditions. That distance between capture and edit allows her to return with clarity, shaping each piece to match the vision she had in mind.

There’s a physical and mental toll behind that clarity. Long treks, isolation and repetition push her into a focused state where instinct takes over. The final images reflect that balance, grounded in real terrain, but driven by imagination.
