In a cultural event slated to define the year in history and art, the Bayeux Tapestry will travel from Normandy to London and go on display at the British Museum from September 2026 until July 2027. This will be the first time the nearly 1,000‑year‑old masterpiece has been exhibited in the United Kingdom since it was created in the 11th century.

The Bayeux Tapestry is an embroidered cloth measuring about 70 meters long. It depicts the Norman conquest of England and the Battle of Hastings in 1066 through 58 interlinked scenes, filled with figures on horseback, ships at sea and dramatic moments of medieval life. Nearly 626 characters and 202 horses work their way across the linen, embroidered with lustrous wool thread.

The exhibition is the result of a historic loan agreement between the UK and French governments. Under the terms of this cultural exchange, France will loan the Bayeux Tapestry to the British Museum, and in return the museum will send treasures such as the Sutton Hoo artifacts, the Lewis Chessmen and others to Normandy museums.

This exchange is timed to lead into a broader season of cultural celebration, including marking the millennium of William the Conqueror’s birth in 2027. The loan itself symbolizes a shared heritage and enduring ties between the two countries.

For nearly a thousand years the Bayeux Tapestry has resided in Bayeux in Normandy. It has rarely left France and never before been shown in Britain on this scale. Its move to London this autumn has been described as a once‑in‑a‑generation event and a blockbuster for the British Museum.

At the British Museum the tapestry will be shown in the Sainsbury Exhibitions Gallery, where it will be accompanied by contextual material drawn from the museum’s own collection and loans. Expect displays that shed light on the tapestry’s creation, the society it reflects and its enduring impact on our understanding of medieval history.
