Pixel Weather: 8-Bit Inspired Skies by Garth Glazier
Published Jun 22, 2026
Michigan-based artist Garth Glazier crafts his dramatic clouds and natural environments the way an old-school video game rendered its worlds: out of stacked, blocky shapes. His ongoing series Pixel Weather explores clouds as pixel-like forms, turning familiar American landscapes into scenes that feel nostalgic and cinematic.
Across the series, Glazier places these stylized skies above classic rural and coastal settings: red barns, open fields, farmhouses, silos, tractors, lighthouses, serene lakes and distant tree lines. The contrast is the key driver of the series. The landscapes feel familiar and grounded, while the clouds around them look monumental, like weather systems translated through the logic of 8-bit graphics and modern digital illustration. At times, surreal details push the scenes even further, with giant cows, oversized coffee cups and hot air balloons appearing like strange, dreamlike intrusions in the sky.
Recently, Garth has also started translating some of his digital works into oil paintings, bringing the series’ screen-born aesthetic onto canvas.
