Sculpted Symmetry: The City of Arts & Sciences Captured by Ryû Janvier
Published Apr 15, 2026
French photographer Ryû Janvier approaches Valencia’s City of Arts and Sciences like a lesson in symmetry, scale and surface. Shooting on film from low angles with tight crops, he reduces the complex to its structural language, emphasizing sweeping arches, tapering spires and ribbed facades.
The series is all about alignment and restraint. Lines converge cleanly through the frame, curves are isolated and repeated, and small details like vents, panels and seams become compositional anchors. Warm light slides across concrete and metal, revealing subtle color shifts and textures that might otherwise disappear at this scale. In several images, reflections and shadows add a second layer, flattening depth and pushing the architecture closer to abstraction.
Rather than presenting the site as a single landmark, Ryû breaks it into modular elements he can slice, frame and reassemble. The images feel precise and intentional, while still grounded in the physical presence of the space. Explore the full series and more of Ryû’s architectural work on his website.
