Soft Shapes and Silly Situations: 3D Illustrations by Qingyu Du

Chinese digital artist Qingyu Du creates playful 3D illustrations filled with rounded characters, exaggerated proportions and a cheerful use of color. He crafts his figures using simple geometric forms, with oversized heads, wide eyes and flexible limbs that make each scene feel like it’s been pulled from a cartoon.

Qingyu turns everyday activities into small visual jokes, whether his characters are exercising, gardening, taking photographs, eating fast food or wrestling with an enormous pink piggy bank. Objects often become part of the character design itself, with bodies twisting into unusual shapes or merging with pizza, clothing and other familiar forms.

Qingyu is also the co-founder of Joy Studio, established in 2020 with fellow designer Zhang Jun. With backgrounds at Tsinghua University’s Academy of Fine Arts and Pratt Institute, the pair have worked across branding, packaging, IP and UI design for clients including Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Lenovo, Hilton and Nestlé.
