Strange Forms, Familiar Feelings: Creatures by Cat Johnston
Published Mar 30, 2026
UK-based artist Cat Johnston creates intriguing creatures shaped by childhood memories, folklore and nature. Trained in animation and now working as an illustrator and model maker, she crafts peculiar figures that feel just a little awkward, yet full of expression.
Her models are crafted by hand using layered paper, painted surfaces and carefully assembled textures. The endearing cast of characters ranges from playful interpretations of the sun and the moon to hybrid animals and dense, plant-like figures built from overlapping forms.
Cat recently completed her first short film, The Wickywock and the Jubjub Berry, produced in collaboration with animator Joseph Wallace. You can watch it in full below or via her YouTube channel.
