The Shape of Memories: Riccardo Magherini’s Layered Visions of Hanoi
Published May 15, 2026
Italian photographer Riccardo Magherini returns with a new chapter of The Shape of Memories, an ongoing photographic body of work we first featured in 2016 through his Bangkok series. The latest collection, Hanoi, continues his exploration of dense urban environments, not as single frozen moments, but as layered records of movement, perception and accumulated detail.
Rather than relying on one clean “slice of life” frame, Riccardo reconstructs each image from multiple fragments gathered while moving through the city. Gestures, architecture, light, texture, signage and atmosphere overlap across the compositions, creating scenes that hold multiple moments at once, the same way memory does: imprecise, atmospheric, and emotionally faithful.
The Hanoi chapter extends a 15-year body of work spanning Tokyo, Hong Kong and Bangkok, and was presented earlier this year as a solo exhibition at the 10th Xposure International Photography Festival in Sharjah. With Hanoi, Riccardo keeps expanding a series that treats the city not as a fixed subject, but as an experience too dense for a single frame to contain.
