Timeless Lines: Sam Chick Captures the Beauty of a 1960 Mercedes-Benz 300SL

UK-based photographer Sam Chick is back on the grid with another beautifully shot automotive series, this time turning his lens toward a rare 1960 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster for classic car specialist Hilton & Moss.

Presented against a minimal gray backdrop, Sam’s images allow the 300SL’s sculptural proportions and sweeping curves to shine. Wider views highlight its long bonnet, rounded rear and distinctive side vents, and tightly framed details draw attention to the chrome brightwork, beautifully preserved instruments, woven upholstery and wonderfully tactile interior. The understated DB166 Blue Grey finish is particularly striking under the soft studio lighting, shifting subtly across the car’s flowing surfaces.

Manufactured in September 1960, this roadster still carries its original engine and was first supplied to the US before arriving in the UK in 1996. Hilton & Moss recently restored the car to its original factory colorway, with the work also including a rebuild of its 3.0-liter straight-six engine and careful renewal of the black leather interior. With only 1,858 300SL Roadsters produced between 1957 and 1963, it remains an exceptionally rare piece of automotive design, captured here with the precision and restraint it deserves.
