Tomàs Barceló’s Futuristic Relics Look Like Artifacts from a Lost Civilization

Published Jun 19, 2026

We first featured the work of Mallorcan sculptor Tomàs Barceló back in 2021, and since then he has continued to expand the strange, captivating world he has crafted around archaic forms, science fiction and handcrafted detail.

Trained at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Barcelona, Tomàs brings together traditional sculpture, assemblage and polychromy to create masks, busts and wall-mounted figures that feel like relics from a civilization that never existed. His style is defined by weathered metal textures, ornate surface patterns, mechanical fragments, oxidized hues and faces that sit somewhere between ancient idols, ceremonial armor and futuristic beings. His sculptures look aged and unearthed, but also imaginative and theatrical, shaped by his early love of ancient art, fantasy, science fiction and childhood building toys.

Tomàs’ path has been just as eclectic as his work, spanning roles as a teacher, lifeguard, mariachi, bagpiper, film sculptor and gallery artist. Through it all, his main goal has always been simple but powerful: to bring sculpture back into everyday life as a popular, accessible art form, something that can live in the home rather than only behind gallery walls.

For more of Tomàs Barceló’s work, check out his portfolio and follow him on Instagram.
