Vienna Symphonies: Monochromatic Architecture by Thomas de Franzoni

Italian photographer Thomas de Franzoni returns to the grid with Vienna Symphonies, a striking black-and-white study of the city’s architecture as musical notation. His carefully composed captures reduce Vienna’s buildings to neatly arranged sequences of line, light, shadow and repetition.

Waves of balconies rise like musical phrases, window grids form shifting patterns and sweeping curves lead the eye through deep, cinematic spaces. Empty areas act as quiet pauses, while the occasional solitary figure provides a subtle sense of scale, appearing like a distant note within an otherwise silent composition.
