Vintage Objects Rebuilt in Paper by Manabu Kosaka
Published May 7, 2026
Japanese artist Manabu Kosaka makes paper do the work of plastic, metal, glass and circuitry, recreating vintage objects with extraordinary attention to detail.
Working entirely by hand, he builds scale sculptures of cameras, watches, radios, gaming consoles and other familiar objects using only paper. The pieces are not simple replicas. Kosaka studies the mechanics of each item closely, often including internal components, moving parts, hinged panels and removable sections. Beyond the detailed outer cases, you’ll find elements like a 35mm camera’s film chamber or a Super Nintendo circuit board. Even an iPhone becomes a paper shell with its electronics exposed beneath the surface.
Kosaka’s creations are instantly recognizable, yet his monochrome approach strips away color and material to redirect the focus to form and structure, giving each piece a more sculptural presence.
