AYANEO Pocket DMG fully revealed, alongside the Pocket Micro & other exciting retro-inspired devices

Published May 19, 2024

AYANEO has finally unveiled all the details about their highly anticipated Pocket DMG, a high-end vertical handheld inspired by the Game Boy, boasting an OLED screen and an innovative control scheme.

The device was showcased at the latest AYANEO Remake event, where the company also introduced the AYANEO Pocket MICRO and several other products infused with nostalgia, a signature aspect of the Remake collection.

AYANEO Pocket DMG

AYANEO’s first vertical retro handheld, the AYANEO Pocket DMG, combines the iconic look of the Game Boy with AYANEO’s minimalist design aesthetic, and it looks fantastic. The design is reminiscent of the Analogue Pocket, but the DMG has its own distinctive elements, including a touchpad area next to its single analog stick, which could prove to be an interesting control setup.

Vertical handhelds aren’t tipically known for being the most comfortable, so AYANEO paid particular attention to ergonomics when designing the Pocket DMG. The device features a sleek body frame with rounded corners at the bottom and a curved grip area on the back, aiming to provide a comfortable playing experience.

But the most exciting feature of this device is its display, a 3.92″ OLED screen that offers a sharp resolution of 1240×1080 and 419 PPI. This means that games will look absolutely amazing on the Pocket DMG.

Under the hood, the handheld boasts the Snapdragon G3x Gen 2 chip, coupled with a powerful active cooling system, so it should be able to handle both retro titles and high-end mobile games with ease.

In terms of controls, the Pocket DMG moves away from the traditional dual analog stick setup seen on other devices. Instead, it features an innovative analog stick and touchpad combo, which also helps give the handheld its unique look. It remains to be seen how well this will work, but the concept is promising.

The device also includes ergonomically designed shoulder buttons and a retro-style roller key for easy access during gameplay.

AYANEO Pocket Micro

Alongside the Pocket DMG, AYANEO also unveiled the Pocket MICRO, a beautifully designed horizontal handheld that pays homage to the Game Boy Micro. The device features a bezel-less full-screen design, similar to AYANEO’s previous handhelds such as the 2S and Pocket S.

The device is equipped with a high-quality 3.5″ display that provides a resolution of 960×640, offering four times the pixel density of the Game Boy Advance and Game Boy Micro’s resolution, and it’s powered by the Helio G99 processor, which should be more than enough to handle GBA games.

The Pocket Micro is about the same size as an iPhone 14 Pro Max, making it easy to slip it into your pocket and take it with you wherever you go.

Additional announcements

In addition to the Pocket DMG and Pocket Micro, AYANEO also introduced several other devices in the REMAKE series.

These include the Starship Graphics Dock AG01, a sci-fi themed docking station equipped with the AMD Radeon™ RX 7600M XT mobile graphics card, the Retro Mini PC AM01S, an evolution of the mini PC we previously reviewed right here (now with a real display and upgraded specs), the revised AYANEO AIR 1S, boasting a faster Ryzen 7 8840U chipset, and the AYANEO Retro Power Bank, a 12000mAh power bank designed to mimic the look of the SNES.
