Erin Cone’s Minimalist Figurative Paintings Revisited

Ten years after we first featured her work, Santa Fe-based artist Erin Cone continues to refine her distinctive fusion of figurative realism and minimal abstraction. Her meticulously painted subjects emerge from fields of colour and negative space, their bodies cropped, interrupted or partially concealed by geometric shapes.

Erin creates a deliberate tension between lifelike detail and visual disruption. Faces, hands and flowing garments are rendered with remarkable control, while horizontal shifts, overlapping blocks and abrupt gaps fracture the figures without removing their emotional presence. In other works, translucent fabrics and cloud-like washes introduce a greater sense of movement, contrasting with the sharply constructed silhouettes beneath them.

Flowers and foliage also appear throughout her paintings, replacing sections of hair or crowning otherwise restrained portraits with bursts of organic detail. Erin carefully orchestrates every element within the frame, allowing her subjects to work simultaneously as recognisable figures and abstract compositions.
