Leica Gallery Wetzlar is marking a major milestone with Personal Perspectives, a special exhibition celebrating 50 years of Leica Galleries through 50 photographs selected from across the brand’s international gallery program.

Running from June 26 to September 20, 2026, the exhibition brings together a wide-ranging selection of Leica photography, from iconic names such as Elliott Erwitt, Thomas Hoepker, Bruce Gilden, Barbara Klemm, Ralph Gibson and Joel Meyerowitz to more contemporary voices including Franziska Stünkel, Lys Arango and M’hammed Kilito. The result is less a straightforward retrospective than a layered conversation between eras, genres and ways of seeing.

The anniversary traces back to April 1976, when the first Leica Gallery opened in Wetzlar, setting the foundation for a cultural network that has since expanded around the world. Over five decades, the galleries have become more than exhibition spaces, serving as meeting points for photographers, collectors and image lovers, while giving documentary, street, portrait and fine art photography a physical stage.

For Personal Perspectives, current Leica gallerists were invited to nominate images from the gallery program, creating a selection that reflects the breadth of photography Leica has championed over the years. Classic photojournalism sits alongside freer artistic work, while established masters are placed in dialogue with newer voices and fresh perspectives.

It is a fitting way to mark the occasion. Leica’s legacy is often discussed through its cameras, but this exhibition highlights the culture that has grown around them: the images, the people behind them, and the shared belief that photography still has the power to slow us down and sharpen the way we look at the world.
