Ethereal Figures: Sculptures by Coderch & Malavia

Spanish artist duo Coderch & Malavia continue to explore the expressive possibilities of the human body through figurative sculptures filled with movement, tension and emotion. Working together since 2015, Joan Coderch and Javier Malavia create each piece four-handed, shaping their figures collaboratively from the initial modeling stages through to the final bronze cast.

Their sculptures often appear suspended between stillness and motion. Bodies curl inward, stretch toward unseen forces, balance on narrow supports or move through angular frameworks, while flowing hair, fabric, wings and natural forms intensify the sense of momentum. Although firmly inspired by a classical aesthetic, the work feels decidedly contemporary, with selective touches of vivid blue, green and gold bringing a symbolic quality to the restrained surfaces.
