Hand-Drawn Stories: Atmospheric Scenes by Henrique de França

Brazilian artist Henrique de França creates intriguing, unsettling worlds through graphite on paper. Set among flooded streets, sparse buildings and fog-covered landscapes, his monochromatic drawings transform familiar surroundings into scenes that feel like half-remembered dreams.

Henrique’s compositions are often populated by solitary figures who run, wander or stand motionless. Children play in deep water, people disappear into mist and unexpected elements, from wandering horses to columns of smoke, interrupt the stillness. Reflections, elongated shadows and repeated utility poles bring structure to each image, while large areas of empty space heighten the sense of isolation.

The São Paulo-based artist uses subtle shifts in tone and finely worked textures to create an atmosphere that is both cinematic and deeply ambiguous. Rather than offering clear narratives, his drawings capture fragments of events whose meaning remains just out of reach, inviting us to imagine what happened before each moment and what may follow.
